I came across a Medieval illumination (early 1200's), of a rare Medical text. A flayed man carrying his skin on a pole. I realized it was a great image for commenting, in a subtle and universal way, on race. The burden of racial identification and discrimination, and the pride in and collective history of one's tribe. My figure walks through a cool and pitiless industrial urban landscape.
