St. Nicholas Throwing the Golden Dowry to the Unwed Girls
St. Nicholas Throwing the Golden Dowry to the Unwed Girls
Acrylic on Canvas
14" X 11"

This painting was inspired by 15th c. Florentine painting (in this case by Ambrogio Lorenzetti). This period meant a lot to me when I was beginning to find a language for myself. I admired the clarity of composition, the flatness of the shapes to simplify the reading (which related to my father's cubism), the decorative color, and the involved narratives in these paintings. I had a day pass to the Uffizi and Pitti Palace, and used to stand daily for hours in front of these iconic paintings, trying to absorb as much as possible. I knew that (even by osmosis) I was taking in the abc's of painting language. In the life of St. Nicolas, he saves a family of sisters from a lifetime of prostitution by tossing them a dowry for their father.
