Seven Works of Mercy was a popular subject for Renaissance painting. Usually the seven works were treated individually. Caravaggio combined all seven in a wonderfully sordid Neapolitan street scene. I thought I could work these scenes of moral principles into a narrative, and the result was this small book. A small number were produced and given or mailed to friends.
