The Suicide of Queen Dido of Carthage
The Suicide of Queen Dido of Carthage
Oil on Canvas
36" x 24"

An image that came from an opera video. Queen Dido, the founder of Carthage (modern-day Tunisia), committed suicide according to the ancient Greek writer Virgil, when the god Jupiter forced her lover Aeneas, a Trojan prince, to abandon her to go to Italy. I wrestled with this painting for some time, and abandoned it never considering it finished. I pulled it from storage recently and found that I feel finally at peace with it. The suitably elaborate frame was a found object.
