This is just after college. I was working at Aero Stop Nut in Newark, N.J., trying to figure out how, and what, I was going to paint. I was renting a small attic apartment with steam heat (ideal in the winter!). In complete frustration, and after much drinking and music listening, I began to paint the things in front of me; views outside my window and this sweaty self-portrait, influenced a bit by Degas.
