This is a secular altarpiece, which shows a miraculous magic act. I’ve always liked images of magic in artwork because magic happens over time, which makes it impossible to represent. Religion often celebrates the magical; the walking on water, the healing a blind or crippled man, the feeding a multitude with two loaves and fish, or raising the dead. My participant is in a different time and place.
