This is a secular altarpiece, which shows a miraculous magic act.I’v always liked images of magic in artwork because magic happens over time, and the enjoyment of a painting does also. Religion often celebrates the magical; the walking on water, the healing a blind or crippled man, the feeding a multitude with two fish, or raising the dead.
