This painting is based on Bocklin’s ‘Isle of the Dead’, that I enjoyed many times at the Met, while living in NYC. My good friend Nikolaus Mohr, a German painter and art critic, had done a series of them, and I told him recently I was going to do one. I thought Alligator Alcatraz was a natural; ‘Isle’. Bocklin wrote about his ‘Isle’ to its’ buyer, that ‘You will be able to dream yourself into the world of dark shadows’.
