A life-mask by the great ancient Egyptian sculptor Thutmose. This one has a very poignant expression, and maybe because of that I’ve seen it used as a Thutmose self-portrait. Thutmose , a great artist, created his own small tomb, which he painted. In it he painted himself as dead, holding a small Egyptian palette. It’s the earliest artist self-portrait known.
